Here's a story I had to write in my tenth grade English class. Enjo!
Double Dare Kim, Tiffany
English 2, Period 5
October 31, 2000
On October 31, 1998, the sky was filled with dark rain clouds. The wind started to howl through the trees, and raindrops started to fall. But this didn’t discourage the trick-or-treaters. In fact, there seemed to be more of them on this dark afternoon than on any previous Halloween.
In the early afternoon, little kids and their parents started going from house to house, collecting candy. If you looked up and down the block, you would see little goblins, pumpkins, and witches carrying little paper bags, going from house to house. As the rain started to fall, the flow of little trick-or-treaters faded. The older children started on their candy collecting expeditions. But nobody dared to go to the old house on Alpine Lane. That is nobody but Bobby Harris, Stevie Auburn, Maggie Williams, and Jason Kieselguhr.
They were trick-or-treating together, and their bags were full of candy. As they left a house across from the old one on Alpine, Maggie groaned.
“This is dumb. We’re just getting the same kind of candy over and over again from different people.”
She tossed her hair over her shoulder and sighed. Then she said,
“Oh yeah, and I hate wearing this stupid wig. How come I always have to be a witch, anyway? Why can’t I just be myself?”
Jason looked at Maggie, disgustedly. Then he said,
“Look, if you don’t want to go trick-or-treating with us, then that’s okay. Nobody’s making you come with us, you know. Just go home, and don’t ruin it for the rest of us. Some of us are having fun, even if you aren’t.”
Maggie gave Jason a dirty look and said,
“Fine then, you bogus Headless Horseman! I don’t need you people to have fun! I should be with the girls, making candied apples.”
She turned and started to walk away. Stevie and Bobby had already crossed the street so Jason ran to catch up with them. When he reached them, he panted for breath.
“What’s up, guys?” he asked.
“Oh Jason, I just wanted to know if you would accept a double dare.” Steven said, and motioned towards the old house.
“I dare you to go into that old place,” Steven said.
“Jason, do you accept his dare? Come on man, and don’t be chicken! Besides, it’s not that bad. What could happen?
“If you don’t come out after a while, Stevie and I could split your candy.”
Jason gave his friends a small smile. Then he nodded at them and started walking towards the old house on Alpine Lane.
The old house stood on the corner of Alpine Lane and Dreary Lane. It stood there, daralict and out of repair. Weeds grew everywhere on the lawn, and cobwebs climbed up the wall like ivy on a fence. The wooden boards which boarded up the door were rotting away, and the steps which led up to the door were very creaky.
Jason climbed up the steps and towards the door. The rotten boards felt like rubber cement under his fingers, and he easily pulled them aside. They landed on the doorstep with a soft squish. Jason opened the door with a loud creak, and he was inside the old house.
He was in the front hall, and waited until he was accustomed to the dark. Then he walked towards the kitchen. He didn’t see anything at first, but then he let out a scream. For there in front of him was the Grim Reaper. He was dressed all in black and he had no head. There was just a black void where his head should have been. The Grim Reaper’s hands were long and bony, and they were reaching out towards him.
Jason screamed again and started running towards the door. He didn’t stop when he dropped his candy bag. He didn’t care about it at the time. He had seen enough, and he didn’t want to find out what the Grim Reaper wanted with him. He catapulted towards the door, and bolted from the house.
When he stepped out into the cool fresh air, Stevie, Bobby, and Maggie were standing there. They were all laughing at him. Maggie was laughing so hard, she was clutching her stomach.
“I thought you left, Maggie!” Jason exclaimed.
“Well, it was actually a trick that Stevie, Bobby, and I decided to play on you. We all knew that you would go into that old house, so I told my brother Matthew to go in before you, dressed as the Grim Reaper.
“I knew you’d get scared, but I didn’t know you would get that scared.”
Jason felt a bit embarrassed as all of his friends stood there, laughing at him. He also felt a bit angry. How did he get scared so easily? He couldn’t believe that he had been so stupid. Just as he was about to yell at his friends, the Grim Reaper came charging out of the house, and headed for him. “You forgot your candy, Headless Horseman. Next time, I’ll take you with me to the world of darkness.”
As Matt handed the candy to Jason, Jason couldn’t help it. He burst out laughing.
